Những động từ sau đây thường được dùng ở Giả định thức: ask, recommend, suggest, wish, insist, order, commend, request, and demand. Động từ ở Giả định thức có thể mang hình thức khác. Giả định thức dùng trong trường hợp ngôi thứ ba số ít ở thì hiện tại sẽ không còn s hoặc es nên về mặt hình thức và cách phát âm sẽ giống thì hiện tại của các ngôi còn lại. Lúc này, bất kể chủ ngữ là gì thì động từ to be đều trở thành be khi chia ở thì hiện tại và were khi chia ở thì quá khứ.
